Introduction
Explore the wild western shore of World Heritage-listed K’gari (formerly Fraser Island), where solitude, space, and ocean determine the pace. This is a small-group, all-day excursion by contemporary catamaran with amphibious tenders for beach landings. Each location—Awinya Creek, Bowarrady Creek, and Wathumba Creek—showcases a distinct aspect of K’gari: twisting mangrove channels, freshwater soaks, vibrant dunes, and dazzling tidal lagoons. Guided experiences bring the scenery to life, while beach time, swims, and leisurely walks keep the day relaxed. Because we seek the best tides and circumstances, the precise path changes, adding to the magic.
Full Itinerary
Before we set off: meet us at the Great Sandy Straits Marina – boarding starts 15 minutes before we cast off. After a quick safety briefing and rundown of the day’s plan, we’ll head out across the Great Sandy Strait.
Dynamic Routing: We’ll choose up to three of the best spots (Wathumba, Awinya & Bowarrady) based on the tides and conditions to make sure you get the most out of your day. You can expect a pretty even split between guided activities and free time to do as you like.
When the tide’s in, Wathumba really comes alive – it’s like a huge ocean-lake of the most brilliant blue. You can snorkel over the sandflats where the fish live and the turtles & stingrays cruise by; paddle around the mangroves with a guided kayak; swim, go for a beachcomb, or just find a comfy spot to soak up the sun on the sand. We’ve picked this spot for a reason – it’s perfect for easy-going shallow water exploration.
We’ll take you on a guided kayak into the heart of K’gari’s mangrove-lined hinterland along a freshwater stream that’s just teeming with birdlife and crystal clear water. Depending on the conditions, we might even make a snorkelling stop here too. Fancy something a bit more action-packed? Jump on the tube for a thrilling ride or just chill out with a swim or a sunbathing session.
Start with a look at the really striking coloured sands, then grab your hiking boots and take the guided climb up an old dune for a panoramic view over K’gari & Platypus Bay. Then it’s down to the creek for a wander to a secluded little waterhole where the freshwater flows right into the island’s insides – perfect for a refreshing break.
We’ll bring the boats – they’re basically like a big amphibious 4×4 and can drive right up onto the beach. Just step off, and you’re there. And while you’re enjoying the sights, one of our guides will be on hand to tell you all about the stories, history and ecology of each place – its own unique magic!
