What It Is and Why It’s Worth the Salt
The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s biggest coral reef system — and yes, it’s visible from space. But don’t go strapping into a rocket just yet. You can see it just fine from Queensland’s coast.
It’s made up of:
- Over 2,900 individual reefs
- Around 900 islands
- More than 344,000 square kilometres
That’s a lot of water. And a lot of ways to get it wrong if you don’t plan smart. Your best base depends on what sort of reef experience you’re after:
Why go on a Tour?
Look, if you’re stuck in the city grind — endless concrete, bad air and traffic noise — then a trip to the Great Barrier Reef isn’t just a holiday; it’s a real escape. This place isn’t just Australia’s crown jewel; it’s the world’s largest coral reef system, stretching 2,300km along Queensland’s northeast coast. It’s where you trade traffic jams for turtle sightings and the only “horns” you’ll hear are from tourist boats slicing through crystal clear shallow water reefs.
Getting on a Great Barrier Reef tour gives you a front row seat to a marine environment so vibrant it makes the city’s grey look like a bad dream. Whether you’re a keen snorkeller, scuba diver or just someone who wants to soak up some serious Aussie sun while watching fish dart about, the Reef delivers.
The Best Places to Dive
The Great Barrier Reef isn’t just one spot — it’s a whole string of continental islands, cay islands, and reefs, each with its own flavour. Here’s where to head:

Top Things to Do
Snorkelling is a given, but the Reef’s got more up its sleeve than flippers and floaties.
Snorkelling and Diving
There’s no better way to immerse yourself in the Reef’s underwater wonderland than with snorkelling or scuba diving. Whether you’re a newbie or a seasoned diver, the Reef’s calm lagoons and spectacular coral reefs deliver. Always remember to wear a stinger suit during the wet season—box jellyfish aren’t to be taken lightly! Some of my favourite snorkelling spots are around Agincourt Reef, Moore Reef, and Hastings Reef. Reef HQ Aquarium in Townsville is a handy introduction to the species of fish and marine life you can expect to see in the wild.
Sailing and Tall Ships
Get your sea legs on a sailing trip through the Whitsundays or other parts of the Reef. You can opt for a tall ship experience or a luxury sailing excursion with operators like Cruise Whitsundays. Whether it’s a full-day cruise or a multiday liveaboard diving trip, sailing around the chain of islands offers access to secluded sand cays, private islands, and stunning beryl-tinted waters perfect for swimming and water sports.
Glass-Bottom Boat Tours
For those who want to see the Reef without getting wet, glass-bottom boat tours and visits to underwater observatories provide relaxed, dry ways to explore coral gardens and marine life. These options are perfect for families, the elderly, or anyone wary of wetsuits and snorkels. Reef Cruises View operators around Airlie Beach and Mission Beach often include these in their tour packages.
Scenic Flights and Helicopter Rides
If you’re short on time or want a different perspective, scenic flights over the Reef are a great option. Helicopter rides and scenic helicopter flights offer stunning views of Heart Reef, the Whitsunday Islands and the coral formations. GBR Helicopters and Air Whitsunday depart from Hamilton Island Airport International Airport and regional airports like Cairns Domestic Airport. It’s a good excuse to grab your camera and marvel at this natural wonder from above.
Island Hopping and Day Trips
Explore the Whitsunday Islands or hop between Fitzroy Island, Green Island and Lady Elliot Island. Many day trips include snorkelling, beach time and food for something special. Try a combo tour like the Fitzroy Island Combo or Reef & Helicopter.
Fishing
Go fishing with the pros on a fishing charter in the Coral Sea. Whether you’re after barra, coral trout or mackerel, the Reef and surrounding waters have some great spots. Just make sure you’re croc-wise if you’re fishing from shorelines or mangrove creeks, especially around the Top End.
Sea Kayaking and Water Sports
Paddle around the calm reef fringes and tropical islands for an up-close experience with the water and wildlife. It’s peaceful, low-impact and a great way to explore hidden coves where big boats can’t reach. Plus, it’s a great workout if you’re keen. Many resorts on Daydream Island and Hamilton Island also offer water sports equipment hire, including paddleboards and jet skis.
Cultural Tours and Indigenous Connections
Many tours now include the opportunity to connect with Traditional Owners who share stories about the Reef’s cultural and spiritual significance. It’s an eye-opener and adds depth and respect to your Reef adventure. Plus, you support Indigenous communities and conservation efforts by choosing these tours.
Private Island Picnics and Luxury Adventures
Some tours offer private island picnics on tiny sand cays surrounded by crystal clear water. Imagine a meal of fresh local seafood with only the tropical breeze and birds for company – bliss. The Heart Island Luxury Adventure from Hamilton Island is a popular choice for those looking to splurge on a day of pampering on alabaster sands and lush greenery.
Swim with Minke Whales
From June to August, the Southern Great Barrier Reef becomes a nursery for Minke whales. Guided tours let you snorkel alongside these gentle giants—a truly unforgettable encounter. Just keep a respectful distance and follow the guide’s instructions.
Walk Along the Sea Bed (Helmet Diving)
One of the Reef’s more unusual experiences is a guided walk along the shallow seabed wearing special helmets that allow you to breathe underwater without a mask. You can stroll among coral gardens and tropical fish with ease. It’s perfect if you’re curious but not keen on snorkelling or scuba diving.
