Broadbeach Without a Car: Tram, Walking & Local Transport

Broadbeach is one of the easiest parts of the Gold Coast to handle without a car. Public Transport and Active transport work especially well here because Kurrawa Beach, central dining, GCCEC, The Star Gold Coast, Pacific Fair and two G stations all sit within a compact coastal strip. The tram runs north through Surfers Paradise and south to Burleigh Heads, which covers a surprisingly large share of what most visitors actually want to do.

If You Actually Need A Car

Broadbeach works without a car because the useful bits line up neatly. Kurrawa Beach, Victoria Avenue and the central precinct sit close to Broadbeach North, while Pacific Fair is near Broadbeach South.

The case became stronger in August 2026, when the 6.7 km G extension added eight stations between Broadbeach South and Burleigh Heads. Burleigh is now about 17 scheduled tram minutes away, while the Surfers Paradise precinct is roughly 6–8 minutes north of Broadbeach North.

I would only keep a rental car for the whole stay if several planned stops sit outside that corridor. Otherwise, you can end up paying daily hire and parking fees just to keep the car where you left it.

Walk Or Take The Tram

Google Maps treats roughly 400 m as a five-minute walk and 800 m as about ten minutes. From Broadbeach North, GCCEC, The Oasis, Kurrawa Park, Kurrawa Beach, Victoria Avenue and plenty of local businesses fall within a practical walking area. Pacific Fair is approximately 500 m from Broadbeach South station.

The map is only half the story. Heat, luggage, children and a heroic amount of shopping can turn a short walk into something rather less charming.

My default in Broadbeach is to walk first, then let the tram take over as the day gets longer. The two stations are close enough that short local movements do not need military-grade planning.

Choose The Right Stop

Broadbeach North and Broadbeach South serve different purposes.

Use The Central Stop

Broadbeach North is the better stop for central dining, GCCEC, The Star, Kurrawa Park and Kurrawa Beach. It sits directly opposite GCCEC and also works well for Victoria Avenue.

For most visitors staying in central Broadbeach, this station will quietly do most of the work.

Use The Southern Stop

Broadbeach South makes more sense for Pacific Fair and trips towards Mermaid Beach, Nobby Beach, Miami and Burleigh Heads.

The two stations are only about three scheduled tram minutes apart, so choosing the wrong one is hardly a transport disaster. It usually just means a little more walking at the other end.

Take The Tram

The G tram is the backbone of urban transport through this part of the Gold Coast. Broadbeach North to Surfers Paradise takes roughly 6 minutes, or about 8 minutes to Cavill Ave. The Florida Gardens Tram Stop sits between the two precincts. Broadbeach South to Burleigh Heads takes about 17 minutes.

These are the journeys where the tram makes the car look a little silly. No parking hunt, no local traffic congestion, and no need to remember where you left it hours later.

Check The Fare

Translink fares are A$0.50 per journey on eligible buses and trams. For two adults, that means A$2 for a return trip, or A$6 for three. At that price, a rental car has to save a fair bit of time to make financial sense.

You also do not need a go card for a short stay. Contactless payment works across South East Queensland public transport; each passenger just needs a separate card or device and must tap on and off with the same one. Qualifying bus-to-tram transfers can still count as a single A$0.50 journey.

Plan The Airport Transfer

Since 7 September 2026, route 777 no longer runs directly from Broadbeach South to Gold Coast Airport. The trip now goes by G to Burleigh Heads, then by 777 to the terminal.

From Broadbeach South, the tram takes about 17 minutes to Burleigh Heads, then about 20 minutes by bus. That is about 37 minutes of scheduled travel before the transfer and final walk; from Broadbeach North, add about three minutes.

A direct car from the GCCEC area takes around 30 minutes, so public transport is cheaper, not necessarily quicker. If you travel light, the change at Burleigh is easy enough. Add children, several bags, or a tight check-in window, and a taxi or rideshare becomes a sensible splurge.

Use Buses Or Rideshare

The September 2026 network changes shortened several coastal bus routes because the tram now covers more of the same corridor. Route 700 no longer continues to Broadbeach South, while route 777 now connects with the tram at Burleigh.

The practical model is increasingly tram spine + bus connection. Use the current Translink journey planner rather than trusting an old route guide that still thinks Broadbeach South is the end of the world.

Rideshare earns its place when luggage, late travel, or an awkward connection makes public transport more trouble than the savings are worth. A few paid car trips can still cost less than several days of rental, parking and fuel.

Cycling can also work well for confident riders. The Gold Coast has growing cycling infrastructure, and bike rental companies operate in coastal areas. Private e-scooters are another option, subject to current Queensland rules and local restrictions.

Hire A Car For Day Trips

A car is more useful for hinterland destinations, dispersed natural attractions, and days with several poorly connected stops.

For that kind of itinerary, one-day car hire often makes more sense than keeping a vehicle throughout the stay. Broadbeach is unusually easy without a car; the wider Gold Coast is not.

FAQ

Yes. The beach, central dining area, GCCEC and Broadbeach North sit within a compact walking area. Heat, luggage and mobility needs can still make the tram preferable for short trips.

Yes. Since the G extension opened in August 2026, the trip from Broadbeach South to Burleigh Heads takes about 17 scheduled minutes.

Yes. Eligible contactless bank cards and digital wallets work on G. Each passenger needs a separate payment method.

Not at normal daytime frequency. Late-night and overnight patterns differ, so check Translink before travelling after midnight.

Yes, for the urban Gold Coast coast you can easily reach Surfers Paradise, Southport, Mermaid Beach, Miami, and Burleigh by train, but it’s less useful for hinterland and poorly connected destinations.
