FAQ

Cairns is probably most famous as the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and all that Tropical North Queensland has to offer. The area is also pretty renowned for its lush rainforests, breathtaking waterfalls, incredible wildlife and tropical landscapes.

Most people find that 3 to 5 days is about the right amount of time to spend in Cairns while still having time to get out and explore a bit further afield. Of course, if you can stay a bit longer, the reef, rainforest and other attractions further out of the city are definitely worth checking out.

Cairns is pretty much a year-round destination. The main thing to consider is that the dry season tends to bring slightly milder weather and less humidity, whereas the wet season is warmer, much more humid and, of course, brings a lot more rain.

Not necessarily. Guided tours often include transport to and from the attractions, so you can see quite a bit without hiring a car. Having your own car does give you more freedom to explore independently, but if you’d rather leave the driving to someone else, tours are an easy alternative.

Plenty of tours and attractions in and around Cairns are family-friendly, but it pays to check the details rather than assume every option will suit every family. Age restrictions, the amount of walking involved and what’s included can all make a difference, particularly with younger children. A quick check before booking will give you a much better idea of whether a particular tour is a good fit.
