How to Get from Hervey Bay to K’gari

Getting from Hervey Bay to K’gari, still widely known as Fraser Island, really involves two transfers. First, you’ve got the 23 km drive south to River Heads, and then the 45-minute ferry ride across the Great Sandy Strait to Kingfisher Bay.

If you’ve already got transport sorted out on the island, then just go as a passenger. But if you really do need your own vehicle after landing, then ferry it on. The only trap you need to watch out for is thinking that the “Hervey Bay ferry” departs from the Hervey Bay foreshore — it doesn’t.

Reach the Terminal on Time

The SeaLink mainland terminal is located at 54 Ariadne Street, River Heads, about a 20-minute drive from Hervey Bay under normal conditions.

That short drive is easy to underestimate, and then you’ve got to factor in parking, getting your bags sorted, and checking in, and before you know it, your departure time is a lot earlier than the actual ferry time.

For me, a crossing like this is just like being at the airport, but without the security rigmarole: get there early enough that you don’t get held up by any one slow-moving queue.

If you’re flying into Hervey Bay Airport,y it’s the same story – the airport is just the mainland starting point, and then you’ve got to get through to River Heads.

Decide Whether to Take the Car

Walk-on passenger fares start at A$85 return, so two adults will be looking at A$170 return before you even factor in parking or transfers.

On the other hand, if you want to take a vehicle across, it’s a whole different ballgame. SeaLink currently lists a standard 4WD up to 6 metres from A$135.30 one way. Now, this only really makes sense if the vehicle is going to earn its keep on K’gari. If you’re relying on 4WD transport or hire, then be sure to check where that service starts before shelling out to take another vehicle across.

One detail matters here: being allowed onto the ferry does not automatically make a vehicle suitable for wider travel on K’gari.

Allow for the Full Journey

Allow for the Full Journey

The ferry crossing takes about 45 minutes, but the full trip from Hervey Bay needs more breathing room. Allow roughly 20 minutes to River Heads, plus at least 30 minutes for check-in.

I would work on about 1 hour 45 minutes from the door to the ferry landing. It gives you enough margin for parking, bags and boarding without spending the whole transfer watching the clock. Nobody needs that kind of excitement before an island crossing.

Confirm Your Next Connection

Sort out the K’gari end of the journey before you leave the mainland.

For Kingfisher Bay Resort passengers, the handover is usually straightforward because resort transport can connect with the ferry arrival. Everyone else should know exactly where the next service meets them and which landing point it uses.

I find it easier to plan this leg backwards: lock in the first movement on K’gari, then choose the ferry that lines up with it.

Leave the Car If You Do Not Need It

River Heads passenger parking includes secure paid options. Current rates start at A$30 for one night, A$55 for two nights and A$80 for three nights.

For two adults staying two nights, return ferry fares plus secure parking come to A$225.

That can still be the cleaner option than taking a car across just to have it sit there. A parked car on an island is not much of a travel strategy.

Check the Arrival Point

SeaLink’s current fare and service information is available at the Kingfisher Bay centre, about 45 minutes from River Heads.

Queensland Parks also lists Wanggoolba Creek as a western access point, but services can vary. If your onward transfer depends on a particular landing point, check the live schedule rather than assuming both operate the same way every day.

For a point-to-point journey, that matters far more than saving ten minutes on the departure time.

When it comes to planning your trip, including where to stay, how to get around and what to do before you set off to K’gari, the Hervey Bay guide will be your go-to resource.

Once you arrive on the island, the ball is in the K’gari guide’s court for any further accommodation and transport arrangements — or anything you might want to do beyond the ferry drop-off.

Getting to K’gari itself is pretty simple: from Hervey Bay, go to River Heads, check in, then hop on the ferry to K’gari.

FAQ

No, it doesn’t. The ferry terminal is down at River Head; that’s about a 23km drive, or a 20-minute road trip from town.

Plan for at least an hour and 35 minutes: that’s roughly 20 minutes from Hervey Bay to River Heads, another 30 minutes to check in and 45 minutes to ferry over. If you factor in a bit more time for checking in and whatnot, you’re probably looking at closer to an hour and 45 minutes.

You bet you can. The walk-on fare for an adult is currently $85 return, but you do need to have your island transport sorted out before you set off.

You can. There is parking available at River Heads, including secure parking if you need it, for about $30 a night.

Only if you really need it when you get there, and it’s suitable for the island’s road conditions. Otherwise, leaving your car behind and travelling as a passenger can save you money and hassle.
