Driving on K’gari (Fraser Island) is where you need to start by checking two things out: the vehicle permit requirements and the type of 4WD you are taking. Before entering the recreation area, you’ll need to have a Vehicle Access Permit (VAP) in your hand, and it’s also worth noting that Queensland Parks requires a high-clearance 4WD with low-range capability for the island and advises against using AWD vehicles.
For the majority of visitors, the VAP works out to be A$61.80 for a month — though camping permits and vehicle crossing fees don’t come with it as an added bonus.

Check If You Need a Permit
What’s important to know is that the VAP follows the vehicle – not the people inside. So one 4WD needs one permit, no matter how many people are in there. Even if it’s just you, you still need one to enter the K’gari Recreation Area.
One tiny exception to be aware of: if you stay within the boundaries of Kingfisher Bay Resort & Village, then you can bypass the VAP altogether. But stick your nose outside those boundaries and into the recreation area and you’ll be needing one – don’t forget.
Choose the Right Permit
The good news for most people is that most holidays fit into a month – a 1 month permit is all you’ll need. No cheaper day permits are available either, so a quick visit will cost you just as much as a longer stay in the first month.
| Vehicle Access Permit | Validity | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| K’gari | Up to 1 month | A$61.80 |
| K’gari | More than 1 month–1 year | A$311.00 |
| K’gari + Cooloola | Up to 1 month | A$99.25 |
| K’gari + Cooloola | More than 1 month–1 year | A$498.10 |
Adding Cooloola to one of your trips for less than a month adds A$37.45 to the bill. But only do that if Cooloola is actually part of the route you’re going to be taking – you won’t get any benefit from buying access to somewhere you don’t plan on going.
Check Your 4WD First
A permit gets the paperwork right. It does not make the wrong vehicle capable.
Queensland Parks specifies a high-clearance 4WD with low-range capacity for K’gari and does not recommend AWD vehicles. The distinction matters here; AWD and 4WD are not interchangeable vehicle types simply because both can drive all four wheels.
I would settle this before booking anything else. If ground clearance or low range is uncertain, check the specifications rather than hoping the vehicle will be enough once it reaches the sand.
Valid vehicle registration and correct number plates are also required. Off-road camper trailers need another check for towing suitability, access and the intended Beach camping zone. Tyre pressures, recovery and creek crossings are separate 4WD-planning territory.
Check Hire Conditions
A hire 4WD adds another layer of paperwork. Queensland requirements cover seating, seatbelts and luggage, while the current hirer needs the VAP because permits are not transferable.
Then read the rental agreement. Government approval and rental-company permission are different things; a compliant 4WD can still come with restrictions on where or how it may be driven.
Camping Costs
A camping permit is separate from vehicle access. At QPWS-managed sites, camping currently costs A$7.75 per person per night, with a family rate also available.
Two adults camping for three nights pay A$46.50. Add the VAP and those two government permits come to A$108.30 before the barge, fuel or 4WD hire.
Private accommodation and privately operated campgrounds run under their own arrangements. An overnight stay on K’gari does not automatically mean another QPWS permit.
Book the Crossing Separately
The vehicle barge is another booking again. A VAP does not include the crossing, and a barge ticket does not give you permission to drive through the recreation area.
I find it easiest to keep the trip in three boxes: vehicle access, camping and transport. That also stops the permit from looking like the total price of getting a 4WD onto K’gari.
Check Registration Details
K’gari uses number-plate surveillance, so check the vehicle registration and number plates entered on the permit before travelling.
Keep the VAP accessible too, either digitally or on paper. Essential paperwork is better saved before reaching the island than retrieved later over an uncertain mobile connection.
Recheck Access
A valid permit does not mean every road, eastern beach section or camping access point will be usable. Weather, erosion, fire and maintenance can change access, and the tide window still matters for beach driving.
Check the latest Queensland Parks alerts and K’gari conditions shortly before leaving the mainland. On K’gari, current conditions outrank a plan made weeks earlier.
FAQ
Do I need a separate VAP for every passenger?
No, the permit’s tied to the vehicle, not the people in it. So passengers don’t each need their own permit.
Can I just transfer my K'gari permit to someone else?
No, Vehicle Access Permits aren’t transferable – not even when you’re swapping with someone else who’s using the same 4WD.
Does the permit cover the cost of taking the vehicle barge?
No it doesn’t, that’s a separate booking and cost. The permit’s just for vehicle access to the park.
Do I need a camping permit just because I'm staying overnight in private accommodation?
Not necessarily. QPWS camping permits are only required for the designated campsites managed by QPWS. If you’re staying in private accommodation, the owners or operators will have their own booking system in place.
What's the most important thing to sort out before you go?
Start with your vehicle: make sure you’ve got a suitable 4WD and that it’s all good to go. Then get all the paperwork sorted out – that means arranging the correct VAP, camping permission if you need it and booking the vehicle crossing. And finally, do a last-minute check on current access conditions before you head off.
